Designing the materials and guidelines was a creative and enjoyable experience. It was the first time that I used Google Sites and it took me a little while to become familiar with the application. I found it quite user friendly and thought that students would not find it difficult either. Once all the student tasks, both in Spanish and English, had been uploaded to the website, the academic team involved in the pilot reviewed all of them and tested the hyperlinks and videos. In the meantime I created the online platform for students to publish their compositions and summaries, their ‘e-portfolios’.
In collaboration with Irene Pérez Fernández, University of Oviedo’s module Coordinator, and María del Mar González Chacón, University of Oviedo TANGO Coordinator, a simple and user friendly tracking sheet was designed for students to be able to evaluate and encourage reflection on every completed task (Appendix 5.2 and tracking sheets). All students were emailed the tracking sheets and advice on how to use them.
Setting firm foundations and general safeguarding information to ensure that students were respectful with one another was essential to the success of the project. Following the advice my VLE colleagues, Richard Walker and Wayne Britcliffe (Appendix 5.1), after doing some reading and research I produced guidelines for students to create a safe environment where experiences and views would be shared and compared to form individual opinions in a respectful and professional manner.
